Inspiring theatre from Newfoundland

An extraordinary new play celebrating the life and heroism of Frances Cluett, VAD, comes to SEALL all the way from Newfoundland.
“Fanny” was born and lived in Belleoram, Newfoundland. In 1916, she joined the Volunteer Aid Detachment and was shipped overseas to London, ultimately serving for four years at the 10th General Hospital in Rouen, France.
The play is inspired by her many letters to home, detailing the horrors and heartbreak she witnessed, and revealing how her humor and resilience captured the love and loyalty of all she encountered.
“Women were very much a part of the war and often at the very heart of the horror and terror as they nursed the boys who returned maimed and dying,” said director Jeff Pitcher. “The letters gathered and edited by Bill Rompkey and Bert Riggs and published by Flanker Press give us a remarkable view of that world, and bringing those words to life, off the page and onto the stage, is down to some wonderful work by the playwright.”
