On 11 August 2021, a unique event celebrating Maoilios Caimbeul’s highly-acclaimed mythic poem Agus mar sin Car a’ Mhuiltein (And So Somersault) took place inside the SEALL tent at Armadale Castle.
The evening with Maoilios Caimbeul was Introduced by author, academic and activist Alastair McIntosh (Poacher’s Pilgrimage, Riders on the Storm) who described the poem as “one of the most important Scottish poems” he has read. The panel included young tradition bearers Catherine MacPhee, of the Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre, and Dr Iain MacKinnon of Camus Cross.
Alastair said: “It is a poem that has the mythic qualities of the likes of Tam o’ Shanter, but whereas that focuses on the dark side of the supernatural, Maoilios’ poem brings out the full and often, awesomely beautiful spectrum. I find it remarkable that such a poem has arisen from a traditional Gaelic poet in this era.”
For this sold-out evening of quality live literature, which was presented in English and Gaelic, the poem was translated into English for the first time and the evening launched a 40-page pamphlet which was exclusively produced on the Isle of Skye. Written by Maoilios, designed and produced in Bernisdale, printed by Strath Print in Broadford and hand bound at the Making Publics Press, ATLAS Arts in Portree.
