We're delighted to welcome award-winning novelist Louis de Bernières to Skye for a special live event at An Crùbh in Sleat on the 20th of March. Best known for the internationally acclaimed Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, de Bernières will be in conversation with Raasay-based author and journalist Roger Hutchinson, reflecting on a remarkable literary career. This promises to be a rare and intimate evening with one of the UK’s most celebrated storytellers. Tickets on sale now over on our What’s On page.
Louis de Bernières is an international bestselling author. His most famous novel has been translated into more than 30 languages and adapted for film and stage. Set on the Greek island of Cephalonia during the Second World War, Captain Corelli's Mandolin won the Commonwealth Writers Prize and established him as one of the leading literary voices of his generation.
Before writing full time, de Bernières worked in a wide range of jobs and taught English in Colombia, an experience that shaped the South American setting and style of his early novels, including The War of Don Emmanuel’s Nether Parts and its sequels. His later fiction ranges widely in setting and scope, from the historical epic Birds Without Wings, shortlisted for the Whitbread Novel Award, to A Partisan’s Daughter, shortlisted for the Costa Novel Award, and the Daniel Pitt Trilogy published by Harvill Secker. Alongside novels, de Bernières has written plays, short stories, introductions to biblical texts, and several acclaimed collections of poetry, with a fifth volume forthcoming. A multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, he has also recorded three albums of original music.
Come along and join Louis and Roger for what promises to be a fascinating evening.
